Jalin Turner – $6,800
The biggest underdog of the entire UFC 229 card next month is 23 year old Jalin Turner. It’s unsurprising, as he’s only 7-3 in his professional MMA career, with two of his losses coming via TKO. Despite his somewhat mediocre record and lack of big-fight experience, Turner is a fantastic daily fantasy sports option and has a legitimate shot at pulling off one of the biggest upsets of 2018.
After competing in regional shows for the majority of his career, Turner was offered a fight on Dana White’s Contender Series against another young hungry fighter looking to earn a UFC contract. He showed his true potential here with a first round doctor stoppage. Turner is massive for the lightweight division at 6’3. If he can use his reach and keep his UFC 229 opponent on the outside, he has the opportunity to record his first UFC victory. At just $6,800 he’s one of the best options in our expert UFC 229 DFS picks.
Sean O’Malley – $9,200
We move now from one of the biggest UFC 229 underdogs to one of the biggest favorites. Sean O’Malley has become one of the fastest-rising stars in the UFC after just two fights in the promotion. He’s looked phenomenal in both, earning decision wins over Terrion Ware and Andre Soukhamthath using his wild and unorthodox striking. He’s facing somewhat of an unknown fighter next month at UFC 229, yet almost all MMA betting experts agree that O’Malley is the man who will see his hand raised.
What makes Sean O’Malley such a good daily fantasy sports pick? For one, it’s his striking output. He has thrown more than 360 punches and kicks in just two UFC fights. That high volume of strikes adds DFS points quickly, and will be a big earner for anyone drafting him into their fighter lineup.
Alexander Volkov – $8,700
The heavyweight division is in a weird place now that Daniel Cormier is the champion and has a future bout already set with former champ Brock Lesnar. The rest of the fighters above 205 pounds have to make a big statement in order to earn a shot at the belt, and the next man in line may very well be Alexander Volkov if he can get the win against Derrick Lewis at UFC 229. The oddsmakers are predicting he does just that, as he’s one of the safest options in our expert UFC 229 DFS picks with DraftKings.
Volkov had a lackluster debut in the UFC, earning a split-decision against Timothy Johnson back in November of 2016. Since then, he’s shown potential to become the next heavyweight champ, dismantling Stefan Struve and, most recently, earning a KO victory over former champion Fabricio Werdum. Volkov isn’t particularly gifted in any aspect of MMA. More importantly, he knows how to get his hand raised. We at Sports Harbor feel he picks up a first round TKO/KO to cement his place as the heavyweight number-one contender.
Khabib Nurmagomedov – $8,400
Alexander Volkov may be Russia’s best hope at earning heavyweight gold, but the title of Russia’s top fighter goes, unequivocally, to Khabib Nurmagomedov. The Dagestan native has the best record in MMA at 26-0, and has never lost a single round in professional competition. His fight with Conor McGregor in the main event of UFC 229 is being billed as the biggest in UFC history, and he’s the betting favorite, according to most US Daily Fantasy Sports sites, including DraftKings.
Khabib is one of our expert UFC 229 DFS picks for a good reason. He’s only been hit a handful of times during his career, and has arguably the best wrestling in all of MMA. He’s relentless with takedowns, and has a great submission game when his opponents begin to wear out. DraftKings gives out significant points for takedowns, and it’s almost a foregone conclusion that Khabib will earn at least a few against McGregor.
Michelle Waterson – $7,900
Despite being undersized against almost every opponent she’s faced in her UFC career, Michelle Waterson has remained a top contender in the strawweight division. She burst onto the UFC scene back in July of 2015 with two consecutive submission victories, and has alternated wins and losses since then to some of the best fighters at 115 pounds.
Waterson is taking on another savvy veteran, Felice Herrig at UFC 229. It was a surprise for some to see her listed as the underdog by sites like DraftKings, yet it provides fans of DFS a fantastic opportunity to earn money. Michelle Waterson is a very talented striker, and has shown time and time again that she can finish fights when they hit the ground. Herrig is no slouch herself, but Waterson has more than enough tools to get the victory here, most likely by decision. She costs only $7,900 to draft, making her an easy option to place into our expert UFC 229 DFS picks.
Ryan LaFlare – $8,800
With nine fights in the UFC promotion, it’s a little surprising to see Ryan LaFlare opening up the first fight on the UFC 229 card. This is likely due to his fighting style, which has led to every single one of his victories in MMA’s biggest show coming by way of decision. He’s not a flashy, exciting fighter, but Ryan LaFlare knows how to win and has only lost to top competition at welterweight.
It’s the style matchup next month that makes him such a great option for our expert UFC 229 DFS picks. LaFlare is one of the best wrestlers at 170 pounds, and his opponent often relies on wrestling himself to get the victory. If LaFlare can keep the fight on the feet using his wrestling in reverse, he can get the victory, and perhaps the first stoppage win of his UFC career.
