The 2018/19 NFL season has just wrapped up its first week, and fans and experts alike are already making their picks for Super Bowl contenders heading into 2019. A number of teams stood out during the preseason and week one, including some underdogs that proved oddsmakers wrong with upset wins. Here we take a look at the top three Super Bowl underdogs that have a real shot at earning the championship this season.
Despite losing their first game of the season to the Carolina Panthers, the Dallas Cowboys still have massive potential make it all the way to the Super Bowl. They failed to make the playoffs last year, in part due to Ezekiel Elliot’s suspension that left the Cowboy’s offense in disarray for six games. With their center, Travis Frederick, out indefinitely due to an autoimmune disease, they entered into this past Sunday’s game against Carolina as the slight underdog and ultimately lost 8-16.
The Cowboys’ offense will no doubt suffer as a result of Frederick’s absence, but they still have more than enough to push down the field with Dak Prescott and the aforementioned Ezekiel Elliot on the field.
If Dallas can get in their groove, they have a real shot at earning a championship this season. Their offensive line will need to make some adjustments moving forward in order to prove this theory correct, and we’ll have a better idea as to where the Cowboys stand when they take on the Giants this Sunday.
Some may argue that Jacksonville shouldn’t even be considered a Super Bowl underdog this year. They loaned credit to that notion during the first game of the season with an impressive 20-15 victory over the New York Giants, and looked solid throughout the preseason with notable wins over the Falcons, Vikings, and Buccaneers.
Their defense is one of the strongest in the league right now thanks to Dante Fowler Jr. and Malik Jackson forming a near-impenetrable wall.
On Sunday, the Jaguars will be taking on the New England Patriots in what, on paper, should be one of the most competitive games of the season. Fans of daily fantasy sports have some great opportunities choosing players from both these teams. A win for Jacksonville here will likely change their status as a Super Bowl underdog, but as it stands they’re one of the dark horses heading towards the championship this season.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs had a respectable season last year, going 10-6 and winning the AFC West. They lost in the Wild Card slot against the Titans to spell the end of their season, but are looking rejuvenated and ready to make another playoff run this season.
Game one for the Chiefs came against the Los Angeles Chargers, who in their own right are seen as one of the top Super Bowl underdogs this season. Tyreek Hill cemented his status as one of the most dynamic wide receivers in the NFL with 169 yards and two touchdowns to help secure the Chiefs’ first regular season win. QB Patrick Mahomes seems at some times reliant on Hill’s speed, yet the two make one of the dangerous offensive duos in the league right now.
The Chiefs are looking solid, and have a legitimate shot at going all the way this season. Some questions remain over their defensive capabilities but, as the saying goes, sometimes a strong offense is the best defense. They are without a doubt one of the top Super Bowl underdogs this season and a solid pick to win the AFC West.
