Max Holloway -135 vs. Brian Ortega +105
The main-event of UFC 231 pits two young, talented fighters against each other. Both Max Holloway and Brian Ortega have been on an absolute tear over the past several years, and even the best MMA betting experts are having a tough time predicting the outcome here. Our UFC 231 expert betting tips may provide an idea of what may happen.
Holloway has used his elite striking and natural range to capture the featherweight belt. He’s riding a 12-fight win streak right now, including two wins over legendary Brazilian, Jose Also. The key to success for Holloway in this fight will be dictating the range. He’s the much taller man, and if he can keep Ortega on the outside for the much of the fight he can get the win. At the moment, Intertops Sportsbook lists Holloway’s odds at -135.
Brian Ortega is as close to a specialist in MMA as any other fighter. His Brazilian Jiu Jitsu might be the most dangerous in the sport right now, and over the past several fights he’s shown some massive improvements in his striking. Unfortunately, Brian tends to start slow. If he loses the early rounds to Holloway, he’ll need to pull off one of his patented submissions late, and we just don’t see that happening. He’s coming into this fight as the slight underdog with current odds of +105.
Prediction: Max Holloway via Unanimous Decision
Valentina Shevchenko -300 vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk +225
Before Holloway and Ortega face off, two of the most decorated female fighters on the planet battle it out. These two have actually fought each other multiple times in kickboxing, with each victory going to Shevchenko. MMA is an entirely different sport though, and we feel the odds here don’t reflect how much of a toss-up this fight really is.
It’s not a huge surprise to see Valentina Shevchenko come into this fight as the significant favorite. She’s the naturally bigger fighter, and (as we just mentioned) has defeated Joanna in kickboxing a number of times. Despite her high-level of striking, we think Shevchenko will be looking to take this fight to the ground, which may actually be a detriment. Still, most UFC 231 expert betting tips agree that her status as the betting favorite is justified, with current odds of -300 to win, according to Intertops Sportsbook.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk was looking like one of the UFC’s most dominant champions before her upset loss to Rose Namajunas last year. She’s already bounced back with a win, and may come into this fight much fresher without the devastating cut down to 115 pounds. She’s an underdog here, but if she can keep this fight on the feet and utilize her elite boxing, she can pull off the upset.
Prediction: Joanna Jedrzejczky via 4th round TKO.
