Only three weeks remain in the regular 2018 MLB season, and World Series contenders are finally beginning to emerge. A number of pivotal games will be taking place over the next several days that may determine who makes the playoffs, and who does not. Here are a few of the week 22 MLB games to keep an eye on.
Diamondbacks vs. Rockies: September 10
On Tuesday, September 11th, the Arizona Diamondbacks will take on the Colorado Rockies in the first game of their series. The Diamondbacks are heading into this four-game series with tremendous pressure on their backs. They lost their last series to the Braves, and are at risk of failing to make the playoff cut if they fall short against the Rockies. Colorado is in a somewhat similar position heading into this series, having lost their most recent set of games against the Dodgers.
The NL West has become one of the most hotly-contested divisions in the MLB. The Diamondbacks sit at number three with a current record of 76-67. A series win against the Rockies may be enough for them to secure a playoff spot. Much of the pressure here rests on the shoulders of Zack Godley. The 28 year old pitcher holds a 4.51 ERA overall, and has yet to taste defeat while playing against Colorado.
German Marquez will be the starting man on the mound tonight for the Rockies. He has accumulated a 2.43 ERA in his past five starting games, four of which the Rockies came out victorious. This team has faced the stiffest competition in the entire National League this season, with only seven games coming against teams with a sub-.500 record. The stakes for this series could not be higher for each team, making it one of the most important week 22 MLB games to watch while we head towards the playoffs.
Yankees vs. Twins: September 11
The first game of the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins will take place tonight in a battle between two top American League teams. It’s another game with playoff implications, as the Yankees look to keep their top wild card spot with a series of wins against the always-game Twins.
The Yankees will be starting this series off with pitching ace J.A. Happ, who holds an impressive 3.10 ERA. For game two, New York is starting off with bullpen pitcher Sonny Gray in an attempt to keep their primary starters fresh an extra day. Most MLB experts expect the Yankees to win at least two of these games, particularly with the stakes involved.
That doesn’t mean the Twins will go down easy. They’re the number-two ranked team in the American League with a record of 65-77. It’s almost impossible for Minnesota to make the playoffs at this point, but they still possess a strong roster of players to give future teams trouble. It’s the pressure to perform for the Yankees that makes this one of the most important week 22 MLB games to watch. A series win for New York could push them into the playoffs while a loss might spell the end of their season.
Dodgers vs. Cardinals: September 13
This Thursday, the Los Angeles Dodgers will take on the St. Louis Cardinals in the first of a three-game series. Both these teams have looked solid throughout the regular season and still have the opportunity to make it into the postseason.
LA has won 11 of their past 15. Their pitching game has been stellar, and offensively they pack some major hitters in the form of Justin Turner and Cody Bellinger.
The Cardinals have been somewhat inconsistent as of late, going 2-2 in their past four games. Sitting at third place in the NL Central, they’ll have to perform at their best in order to get the spot in the 2018 MLB playoffs. This is a tough one to call as both teams have so much riding on their upcoming series together, and their first match against one another on Thursday is without a doubt one of the week 22 MLB games every fan needs to pay attention to.
